If you haven’t tried (or at least heard of) cannabis strain Blue Dream, there’s a good chance you may have been in a time warp for the last 10 years. Why? Because Blue Dream is everywhere you look! It's regularly the #1 seller in Colorado, Washington and California.
Jake Browne, in-house strain expert and reviewer from The Cannabist, wrote: “If I had cataloged the most common request at dispensaries where I’ve worked, it wouldn’t be, ‘What’s going to get me the highest?’ but rather, “What can I smoke that won’t knock me out?”
Browne continues, “Then I’d recommend something with the word ‘dream’ in the name and they’d look at me like I was high.” Browne claims that as a budtender, he doesn’t know which he’s recommended more over the last five years, Blue Dream or the epic (sadly, now retired) AMC series Breaking Bad.
Blue Dream is a Sativa-dominant hybrid, although it’s not uncommon to see it listed as a Sativa strain on many dispensary menus. But, genetically, it is traced to Blueberry and Super Silver Haze, making it a hybrid. This is also why most people report to feel a nice indica-like body high coupled with an invigorating sativa-influenced cerebral experience.
Why does this sativa-dominant dominate so many markets?
For one, it’s an all-around great strain! Its signature evenly balanced properties that produce an uplifting stoney, yet cerebral high, while tempering the couchlock-inducing tendencies of indicas, provide for a lot of versatility — It’s uplifting, but not overpowering. Who doesn’t like to simultaneously feel fully relaxed and intellectually stimulated?
Medical Jane’s Price describes it well: “It’s one of my go-to strains for a relaxing, thought-provoking, and stress-free experience. This hybrid strain seems to make the day’s endless list of things to do seem much more attainable. The effects generated from Blue Dream are typically long lasting, euphoric, and can be full-bodied depending on the cut of Blue Dream you have.”
Appearance & Taste
Blue Dream is often noted for being deliciously aromatic with sweet berry notes. Known for long, thick, tan hairs, peach hues, and nugs that are beautifully crystallized and sweet smelling. Matt Price over at Medical Jane observes “The smell is always rich, with a subtle sugar-cookie funk. This particular batch of Blue Dream has really frosty buds covered in so many sparkling trichomes that it made the overall appearance of the buds seem lighter in color. The vapor from the Blue Dream strain is super smooth, coating the entire mouth with a sweet blueberry sugar taste on the exhale.”
To borrow a term from software development, Blue Dream’s genetics are “open-source,” making it easy for any producer to grow. Danny Danko of High Times noted, "She’s a clone-only strain that isn’t hoarded or claimed by one particular group. Blue Dream is considered more 'open sourced' and cuttings are easy to find."
Consumers report it soothes everything from headaches, pain and nausea to anxiety and depression, even menstrual cramps. A reviewer posting on Leafly notes Blue Dream is: “The 'Bayer' aspirin of bud that should be in every medicine cabinet...Nice well rounded, daytime medication that is not sedating.” Another reviewer claims, “This strain has an extremely swift an suppressing effect against nausea and stomach pain/discomfort.”
One parent who has a son who struggles with severe autism and extreme self-injurious behaviors (SIB). The symptoms are unmanageable with prescription medications (like risperidone and aripiprazole), both of which are neither particularly effective and produce significant side effects. "We use a low dose extract from Blue Dream that can be administered by tincture. It's been a lifesaver," Rosalyn (not her real name) told Clear Choice. "After he medicates [with Blue Dream], the difference is night and day. He's happy, loving, not angry or engaging in self-injury. I feel like I have my son back!"
Of course, everyone responds differently. One reviewer claims that Blue Dream actually gave him a headache and amped him up too much: “My wife and I smoked the other night. Made me feel pretty edgy and paranoid. My throat was pretty dry. I'm not sure whether we smoked too much (just one packed bowl) but neither of us were crazy about the high. Also felt a bit headachy. The next day I was pretty foggy. We're going to try LA Confidential next.”
Blue Dream is no doubt an epic sativa-dominant hybrid that has rightfully earned a place among the West Coast elite strains hall of fame. Unsurprisingly, most people love Blue Dream. They appreciate it for making them feel (paradoxically) stimulated and invigorated, while relaxed. No doubt, it’s not unusual for different people to feel different effects, so not everyone will feel this way. But, that’s the general consensus. Nonetheless, Blue Dream does have fairly high (though not over-the-top) THC content, paired with an intriguing chemical composition that could cause variable effects in different people. So if you’re new to trying the strain, start off slow and titrate up accordingly. Enjoy!
